About Me
My name is Kym Francis, and I am a junior high Language Arts teacher from Edmonton, Alberta. I am currently in my ninth year of teaching, and I have focused on utilizing technology in the learning process for the past six years. I was fortunate to be a part of the Emerge One-to-One project for technology, studying the effects of placing technology in the hands of grade seven students for all core subject areas. Since the three year project concluded, we have continued to advance our technology in learning, now operating all classes as places of one-to-one technology. Students are encouraged to bring their own devices into the classroom. I am passionate about my career, and I know the Language Arts classroom is where I belong. I take pride in transforming students from grumpy teenagers into avid readers and storytellers, and I am the very fortunate recipient of Edmonton Public School's An Act to Follow award as well as the Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence in 2009.
Outside of my classroom, I am studying as well. I am currently about half way through the process of obtaining my Masters of Educational Technology from the University of British Columbia. With my history of teaching with technology, I am interested in focusing on how we can use technology to spark creativity in the humanities and encourage students to reach their full potential.
When I am not behind a book myself, I am spending as much time outside as possible, typically with my two dogs. Whether travelling, hiking, running, skiing, or horseback riding, I find myself rejuvenated by the silence and peace that comes with the solitude of being outside. Despite having no traditional creative ability (in the sense of drawing or painting), I enjoy the creativity offered by photography. The heading image is my personal photography, as is the self-portrait on this page.
